Twenty-three days into a saturation run in the North Sea, Isla Maclean and Bruno Vieira cut into a caisson on the Fennock Alpha jacket that had been sealed since 1988, and came back with something in the suits the scrubbers will not clear. Now they are locked in a steel sphere 2.1 metres across at a hundred and thirty-eight metres of pressure, with six days of decompression ahead of them and no way to hurry it. Both have two sores that will not close, in the same two places. The unscrambler flattens their voices into one, so the surface cannot tell which of them is speaking, and neither can be certain the danger in the chamber is the other one rather than themselves. Verrow Subsea controls the schedule and can put them back to bottom at any hour it likes. Six days, twelve decisions, and the only fast way out of a chamber is dead.

Isla Maclean is thirty-one, from Aberdeen, four years in saturation, and the bell diver who went into the Fennock Alpha caisson first. Twenty-three days at depth and six days of decompression left, with two sites on her that will not close — inside the left forearm, the hairline behind the right ear, matched on Bruno to the centimetre. Her HSE record is the only thing she has ever owned outright, and she means to carry it ashore unmarked.

Bruno Vieira is a thirty-four-year-old saturation bellman from Setúbal, sealed in a decompression chamber on the Kestrel Vantage with Isla Maclean for the six days it takes to come up from a hundred and thirty-eight metres. Three days ago they cut into a caisson closed since 1988. He came in on four hundred and seventy-two days at depth, this door makes five hundred, and a run pays only signed off complete. There is a paper in Setúbal with his mother's name on it.
