Character.AI Alternatives for Adults (2026)

By Jangul Aslam · June 24, 2026

Adults didn't go hunting for Character.AI alternatives because a better app launched — they left. On October 29, 2025, Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for under-18s no later than November 25, with age assurance built on an in-house model plus third parties including Persona. Flagged accounts face a selfie check, government ID as the last resort (Character.AI support). Through 2026, users have reported being falsely flagged and have pushed back on the verification flow itself. I unpacked the full timeline in Roletopia vs Character.AI; this piece is about where to go next. Cards on the table: I build Roletopia at Const Agility, LLC, so every competitor claim below carries a dated source, and Roletopia gets its cons in writing.

The short answer: there is no single best Character.AI alternative in 2026; it depends on what you used Character.AI for. For open-ended adult companion chat, Kindroid is the most serious option, with an adults-only ToS and verification only when an account gets flagged. For write-your-own sandbox fiction, AI Dungeon and NovelAI are the established picks. And for authored, mature interactive stories you play as the protagonist (branching choices, voice chat, narration, illustrations), that's Roletopia, the app I build: 60 stories as of June 2026 and growing, rated 18+ on the Apple App Store, with no ID upload of any kind.

What to look for in a Character.AI alternative

The ranking listicles won't help you much: the top two were published in March 2026, neither mentions the under-18 ban or ID verification once, and both rank their own product #1 (Talefy, March 5, 2026; aiga_, March 14, 2026). Here's the screen I'd apply instead:

  • Age handling, in writing. This is the honest version of the "no filter" search. Most adults don't want unmoderated chat — they want mature themes handled like an adult product: age-rated at the store, a clear ToS, no ID upload unless something is genuinely wrong. No ranking page compares those. The table below does.
  • What you were actually using it for. Companion chat, write-your-own sandboxes, and authored stories are three different products sharing a text box. Pick your group before you pick an app.
  • Voice. Check that it exists and what it costs — assume the mic costs extra until you've checked, because it does in my own app.
  • The price model. Four patterns: subscriptions (Kindroid, NovelAI, AI Dungeon), freemium (Talefy, StoryZone), one-time purchase (DREAMIO), tokens (Roletopia). None is wrong. Surprise is wrong.

Authored stories you play

The smallest group, and the one Roletopia competes in — so my own app gets its profile, cons first, further down.

Talefy is the closest like-for-like: interactive AI story games plus character roleplay, where you read other people's choice-driven stories or generate your own, on web, iOS, and Android. Its store copy claims "200+ unique story games" (its own count), and the iOS app carries an 18+ age rating with in-app purchases from $1.99 (App Store); its own blog lists premium at $9.99/month or $99/year. Two notes: the iOS listing sits at 3.4 stars from 93 ratings, and I couldn't find a content-policy statement anywhere on its site as of June 2026 — the 18+ rating is its only stance on record.

Write-your-own sandboxes

Still the household name in this group, AI Dungeon is the original type-anything text adventure: the AI plays game master, and you take the story wherever you want. It's free to play, and the paid tiers from $9.99 to $49.99 a month mostly buy more context memory (memberships guide), on web, iOS, Android, and Steam. I didn't assess its content policies — it publishes its own; read them before subscribing.

Solo writers, not players, are who NovelAI serves: an AI storyteller plus anime-style image generation, web-only, at $10, $15, or $25 a month with a free 50-generation trial. Its terms require that "you must be 18 years or older," and its public docs make no moderation promise in either direction (FAQ) — so distrust any listicle selling it as "uncensored."

The caveat on StoryZone comes first: it's rated 16+ on the App Store, which makes it the adventure pick here, not the mature one. Past that, it's a type-anything "AI Game Master" adventure with auto-generated scene images — actively maintained, sitting at 4.4 stars from 172 iOS ratings, free with subscriptions from $9.99 to $22.99 a month, on iOS, Android, and web.

One developer, $9.99 once on Steam, no subscription: DREAMIO is an AI choose-your-own-adventure with dynamic illustrations and narration, rated Very Positive (88% of 167 reviews). The web and mobile builds let you bring your own API keys across 150+ models, with 10,000 free tokens a day. On content, the Steam page says its AI "may be capable of generating mature content" (violence, profanity), and the developer notes the Steam build cannot generate sexual content.

Companion chat — including the Talkie and Replika diaspora

Kindroid is the serious adult pick: persistent memory, voice calls, selfies. Its age handling is the model everything else should copy: an 18+ ToS "from day one," built for adults only by its own description, and verification only when behavioral signals suggest a minor (under 2% of new free accounts), resolved by a subscription payment or a Yoti selfie-estimation or ID check (Kindroid docs). The free tier offers unlimited messages on a distilled "Lite" model; the standard plan runs $13.99/month on web ($139.99/year), or $14.99 in-app. The catch: costs climb — Ultra adds $24.99 a month, MAX $59.99.

A name that shows up on both of the top-ranking rival lists: Janitor AI, a free character-chat hub whose core pitch is an NSFW toggle and whose quality depends on a bring-your-own API key billed by your model provider (Voiceflow, accessed June 2026). Apps whose main feature is the absence of moderation get a factual mention here, not a recommendation.

If you came from Talkie

Talkie vanished from the US iOS App Store on December 17, 2024, and returned in February 2025 as "Talkie Lab," with no official explanation; the iOS listing now sits at 4.7 stars from about 46,000 ratings as of June 2026, while the original Android app is still live. The voice was always the draw; a 2026 review's summary was "voice is great, but the bans are real," citing a filter that varies by region. The age posture is muddled too: the iOS listing now shows 18+, but Google Play rates it 12+ per a parents'-guide review (Bark, accessed June 2026), with a ToS minimum of 14. If voice persona chat is what you're replacing, Kindroid does it with a straight 18+ posture; if it was voice-chatting with a character inside a story, that's what Roletopia's co-star voice chat is for (below).

If you came from Replika

Replika remains the most polished pure companion app, but 2025 was hard on trust: Italy's data-protection authority fined its maker €5 million (decision April 2025) for GDPR violations including inadequate age verification, and advocacy groups filed an FTC complaint in January 2025 alleging deceptive marketing (a complaint only; no investigation or enforcement has been announced). Talefy's #1-ranking listicle still recommends it without mentioning any of that. If what burned you was a company changing the rules of a relationship overnight, the real answers are Kindroid's explicit adults-only posture — or an authored story, where the narrative can't be patched out from under you.

Where Roletopia fits — and where it doesn't

Roletopia is the one app here I can describe from the inside. It's a curated interactive-fiction app (our own FAQ's ceiling phrase: "not an unfiltered NSFW generator") where every story is told in second person and you play the protagonist. Decision points carry two to four choices, and as of June 2026, stories have between three and 13 written endings, with most offering two or three playable protagonists, so the same plot reads differently depending on whose life you step into. The co-stars (141 of them as of June 2026) are the chat layer: you text or, since the 1.9 update in late 2025, voice-chat with the other lead while speaking as your character, and chat and voice answer in whatever language you type or speak; every scene carries narration audio and an illustration. The age question gets the boring answer it deserves: rated 18+ on the Apple App Store, 18+ by the product's own rule, and nothing to verify inside the app — no ID, no selfie (how that works).

Now the cons, because I'd rather you bounce off this list than off the app:

  • The catalog is dozens of stories, not millions of characters. I spend my weeks in the pipeline that writes, validates, narrates, and illustrates each one; a story can't ship until every decision point and ending checks out. That's why it grows on an authored schedule.
  • It runs on tokens. You never pay to begin a story, but past the complimentary RTC, unlocking stories costs tokens, and chat draws on a separate chat-token balance; optional rewarded ads earn RTC back. Prices vary by region, so the pricing page explains the model instead of listing numbers.
  • Voice chat needs a subscription. Text chat spends chat tokens, but the mic is for Standard or Premium subscribers — free users get an upgrade prompt, not a call.
  • Mobile-first, English-only stories. The full experience is the iOS and Android app; the story library is browsable on the web. Story text is English today; chat and voice already answer in your language.
  • We're small. 10K+ Google Play downloads and a 4.7 App Store rating from 16 ratings, as of June 2026. I'll keep printing that number until it's bigger.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Character.AI alternative?

The best Character.AI alternative depends on what you used it for: Kindroid for adult companion chat, AI Dungeon or NovelAI for write-your-own sandbox fiction, and Roletopia for authored, mature interactive stories you play as the protagonist. For Roletopia against Character.AI specifically, see the head-to-head comparison.

Is there a Character.AI alternative without the filter?

If "no filter" means an app that promises unmoderated chat, you won't find that recommendation here — what most adults actually want is mature content handled responsibly, and the better question is how each app handles age: Kindroid is adults-only by ToS with verification only when flagged (docs), NovelAI requires 18+ in its terms, and Roletopia is rated 18+ on the App Store with no ID upload of any kind.

What happened to Talkie AI?

Talkie was removed from the US iOS App Store on December 17, 2024 (SCMP), returned in February 2025 rebranded as Talkie Lab (Distractify), and the removal was never officially explained. The Android app remains live as of June 2026.

Are apps like Character.AI free?

Most are freemium: AI Dungeon has a genuinely free tier, Kindroid offers unlimited messages on its Lite model, NovelAI gives a 50-generation trial, and Roletopia is free to start, with RTC earnable through optional rewarded ads. DREAMIO is the outlier: $9.99 once on Steam.

Pick your lane

If open chat is what you're replacing, Kindroid is the grown-up in that room. If it's the stories, you already know my answer: plots with stakes already written in, characters who know their part, an honest 18+ rating with nothing to upload. Download Roletopia for iOS or Android — it's free to start, and you never pay to begin a story. Still comparing the story side?
